Getting To Know Kuantan

Tepi Sg. Kuantan

It had been a few months DITH and I had not gone for lunch outside together. Last Monday we had an oppotunity to have our lunch together and we decided to go to 'tepi sungai', a place known as Medan Pelancong.

On the left is 'telur ibu gelama' dish on display

Facing the main road we can see Kedai Amad Gundal known to make excellent songkok, a few kedai kitab, boutiques and kedai kasut. On the other side, facing the river are the kedai gunting rambut, kedai peluru and kedai makan. There are a number of kedai makan preparing masakan kampung such as sayur masak lemak, ikan patin asam tempoyak, ikan bakar, sambal tumis petai, udang besar, ketam goreng, sotong masak berlada, keli masak berlada, gulai rebung, gulai pucuk paku and all sorts of ulam including petai, jering and kerdas. However my favourite is telur ibu gelama masak lemak. Usually we makan 'beridang' (hidang) under the canopy facing the river watching the fishermen returning with their catch. This is not a place to be missed if one visits Kuantan.

FPG plant at Gebeng

For this weekend, the initial plan was to attend a wedding in Raub but since I was not well we decided to go to kenduri aqiqah at Kg. Sungai Karang. We then made a short detour to Pelabuhan Tanjung Gelang, Gebeng.

Silos (KFM) (using polar-c filter)

In the 70's before the port was built, my family and I used to go to the beach wading through the shallow water (due to low gradient water-bed). We even had a class trip to pantai Tg. Gelang when I was at lower secondary in SEMSAS. Gebeng is totally different from what it used to be. It is now a port servicing the Gebeng Industrial zone, full of activities, polluted and has lost its beauty.

I used to frequent this eating place when I worked in Kuantan before. The esplanade has changed a lot since I left. Its beautiful and much cleaner now minus the 'restoran kapal' that used to be there.

About the picnic.. Well I've fond memories.

Again superb photos mate! By the way the sakura is in Zhong Guo.

My frequent place for dinner, when I was staying in Kuantan before. Surprised to know that Kedai Ahmad is still there. There use to be a Dragon Restaurant (real halal Chinese food), there. Still there?

my youngest brother was also at MCC around that year, amir ridhwan. telor gelama lebih sedap dari telur tenggiri. rasa macam telur kurau. that pantai used to be nicer.... dah ada tanah kena sodok kat situ sekarang ni.

tempat tu waktu tengahari memang penuh dengan orang yang keluar office, all ethnic group. we usually ho there before 12.30 am. esplanade tu memang better sekarang and the stalls are cleaner.

tuan keng
if u mentioned dinner, it must be one around the bus station. the one around medan pelancong usually serve lunch. they will be closed by 3 or 4 pm. the other end, do open till midnight.

allayarham ahmad gundal passed away in 2004. his son has taken over the business. still songkok and kitab.

the dragon restaurant, tak perasan pulak. bila sampai situ teringat telu ikan je. ;)

apasal bila balik kampung tak singgah situ. the among best place to have lunch. kalau nak masakan ala lipis around panggung lama capitol.... lauk kampung ikan sungai.

bergen
me too.... not too busy except for friday bila orang terengganu turun, termasuk dari dungun. ;)
tapi dari segi jalan raya, KT is far better. sini lubang banyak, jalan sehala yang memeningkan and poor driving ethic of irresponsible drivers.

easylady
no camera trick. just use polar-c filter to minimise reflection.
memang sedap, macam piknik makan tepi sungai dengan ulam dan sambal tempoyak, belacan etc.
